拿鞘盒的幾種比例｜Forms of the Sheath Box

在有這幾個標準尺寸之前，我們經歷了一段自由試作的時期。

那時還沒有上下蓋的設計，也沒有明確的尺寸規格，只有一張張壓平的葉子，和我們的雙手。

我們試著折出各種造型，讓葉鞘成為可以使用、可以收納的容器。

有些像抽屜，有些比例不一，形狀也隨葉子而變。那段時間的每一次嘗試，都是為了更理解這個材料。

直到 2017 年，我們才慢慢整理出第一批比較穩定的結構與工法，也開始進入「上下蓋」的製作階段。

M 號盒子（2017）是我們最早整理出的穩定結構之一。長方正的比例來自當時對實用性的直覺判斷，厚度與折線的掌握也比較容易，葉鞘的紋理與張力能在這樣的形體中自然展現出來。

L 號盒子與 M 差不多時期出現，尺寸略寬，製作上其實也差不多。雖然尺寸只多了幾公分，但在應用上多了一點限制，不過仍有客人偏好這個比例，至今也仍會接到訂製的需求。它是那個階段重要的嘗試之一，也幫助我們更清楚材料在結構上的可能性。

S 號盒子（2019）是幾年後，因應客戶想裝旅行茶具而開發的小尺寸版本。輕巧、利落，比例清爽，適合裝些小物，也常被用作客製包裝或展覽展示。葉紋在這個尺寸上顯得更集中、清晰。

這三個尺寸（S／M／L），是我們目前最熟悉、也最穩定的形式。它們的製作次數相當，也都曾被不同的客人實際使用、訂購。每一款都有其存在的理由，也回應了不同的使用需求與材料特性。

每一個尺寸，都在反覆嘗試中累積出來。不只是為了形體的完成，也回應著葉鞘這個材料在生活中的各種可能。

到了 2020 年，我們開始挑戰 XXL 尺寸的盒子。這是另一位通路客戶提出的客製需求，也是目前為止最大的尺寸，寬度幾乎接近一整張葉鞘下緣完整展開的幅度。但它也是最難製作的。每次抽模時，只要壓力不均，葉子就會在彎折點裂開。這不是瑕疵，而是材料本身的張力結構。我們至今還在試著找到穩定做出它的方法，也還沒放棄。

這幾個盒子看似只是不同的尺寸，其實也標記著我們每一階段的理解與限制。

每一個比例，都是某種材料經驗的提煉；每一個失敗與完成，也都回應著我們當時能掌握的節奏。

未來，我們仍希望能持續嘗試更多不同尺寸與形式，讓葉鞘在生活中，繼續展現出它獨特的可能性。

鞘箱のいくつかのかたち

現在の定番サイズが生まれる前、私たちはしばらくのあいだ、自由な試作の時期を過ごしていました。

その頃は、蓋もなく、決まった寸法もなく、あったのは平らに伸ばした葉鞘と、自分たちの手だけでした。

いろいろな形に折りながら、葉鞘を使える容れ物にできないかと探っていました。

引き出しのようなもの、比率の違うもの、葉の形にあわせて形も変わる。毎回の試作が、この素材を知るための手がかりになっていました。

2017年になってようやく、安定した構造と技法が少しずつ整理され、「上下蓋」のあるかたちもこの頃から始まりました。

Mサイズの箱（2017）は、初期に完成した安定した構造のひとつです。

長方形の比率は、当時の実用性への直感的な判断から生まれたもので、厚みや折りの感覚もつかみやすく、葉鞘の模様や張力を自然なかたちで表現するのに向いていました。

Lサイズの箱は、Mとほぼ同時期に登場しました。幅は少し広めですが、つくり方はほとんど同じです。

たった数センチの違いではありますが、使い方に少し制限があったため、その後の展開はそれほど多くありませんでした。それでもこのサイズを好むお客様もいて、今でもときどき注文があります。より大きなサイズへの可能性を探る上で、当時の重要な試みでした。

Sサイズの箱（2019）は、旅用の茶器を入れたいというお客様の声から生まれた、小さなサイズのバージョンです。

軽やかで、比率がすっきりしていて、小物の収納にちょうどよく、オーダーパッケージや展示用途でもよく使われます。このサイズでは葉の模様がより凝縮されて見え。

この3つのサイズ（S／M／L）は、今の私たちがもっとも手になじんでいる、安定したかたちです。

どれも何度も作ってきたもので、それぞれ異なる用途や要望に応じて使われてきました。それぞれに理由があり、それぞれに素材の特性が映し出されています。

すべてのサイズは、何度も試しながら、少しずつかたちになってきたもの。

それは単なるフォルムのためではなく、葉鞘という素材が生活のなかでどんな役割を果たせるのかを探る過程でもありました。

そして2020年、私たちは XXLサイズの箱に挑戦を始めました。

別の取引先からのカスタム依頼で、これまでで最も大きなサイズ。広げた葉鞘の下端をほぼまるごと使うほどの幅があります。

しかし、製作の難易度も最も高い箱です。

成形時に圧力のバランスがわずかでも崩れると、折りの部分で葉が割れてしまう。これは欠陥ではなく、この素材が本来もつ張力構造の一部です。私たちは今でも、安定した製作方法を探りながら、この形の完成をあきらめてはいません。

一見、これらの箱はサイズが違うだけのようにも見えますが、

それぞれに、私たちがどこまで素材を理解できているか、どこでつまずいたか、そうした道のりが刻まれています。

ひとつひとつの比率に、積み重ねた素材経験がにじみ出る。

そして、失敗も完成も、その時の自分たちが持てたリズムに応えてくれていたのだと思います。

これからも、まだ見ぬサイズやかたちを試しながら、

葉鞘という素材が、日常のなかでその可能性を広げていけるように。

Before settling on these standard sizes, we went through a period of open experimentation.

There were no lids, no fixed dimensions—just flattened leaf sheaths and our hands.

We tried folding them into different forms, turning the sheath into a container that could hold and store.

Some resembled drawers, with varying proportions and shapes that changed with each leaf. Each attempt during that time was a way to better understand the material.

It wasn’t until 2017 that we gradually developed more stable structures and techniques, entering a phase where we began making boxes with lids.

The M-size box (2017) was one of the first stable forms we refined.

Its rectangular proportions came from a practical instinct; the thickness and folds were easier to manage, allowing the sheath’s textures and tension to naturally come through in the form.

The L-size box appeared around the same time as the M. It was slightly wider, but the making process was much the same.

Although only a few centimeters larger, it had slightly more limitations in use. Still, some clients preferred this format, and we continue to receive custom orders for it. It was an important attempt in that period, helping us explore structural possibilities with larger dimensions.

The S-size box (2019) came a few years later, originally developed for a client who wanted to store a travel tea set.

Compact and clean in proportion, it’s well-suited for holding small items and is often used for custom packaging or display purposes. The leaf patterns appear more concentrated and defined at this scale—making it the form we now use most frequently.

These three sizes—S, M, and L—have become the most familiar and stable forms we work with.

They’ve all been made repeatedly and ordered by clients for different uses. Each has its own purpose and responds to the particular qualities of the leaf material.

Each size was shaped through repeated trials.

Not just for the sake of form, but to explore how this material might live within everyday use.

In 2020, we began working on an XXL-sized box.

It was a custom request from another retailer and remains the largest form we’ve ever attempted—its width nearly spans the full lower edge of a fully opened sheath.

But it’s also the hardest to make.

With each molding, any imbalance in pressure causes the leaf to split at the folds. This isn’t a flaw—it’s part of the material’s structural tension. We’re still working to find a way to make it more consistently, and we haven’t given up.

At a glance, these boxes might seem like just different sizes.

But they mark each phase of our understanding—and our limits.

Each proportion reflects a distilled experience of the material.

Each failure and completion responds to the rhythm we were able to hold at the time.

We hope to keep exploring new forms and scales,

so the sheath can continue to show its unique potential in daily life.
