鞘盒子｜Areca Sheath Box

檳榔葉鞘，是我們常見卻少被珍視的材料。在鄉間，它經常被堆在路邊、樹下，最後被一把火燒掉。對多數人來說，它是沒用的廢料；但對我們來說，它有種讓人無法忽視的吸引力。

它的表面略帶防水性，內層則能吸水，葉面本身的紋理與厚度，也讓它成為一種極具潛力的天然材料。

我們開始從生活中找線索。在阿美族的日常裡，有許多盛裝食物的容器做法，與葉鞘的性質不謀而合；也發現東南亞許多國家，過去就有使用棕櫚葉類製作盒子的傳統。

「鞘盒子」的想法，就是這樣慢慢長出來的。我們保留傳統做法中彎折的結構，將厚實的葉鞘在軟化狀態下手工折出上下蓋形狀，再經陽光曝曬與自然風乾，葉鞘就會定型，變得堅固穩實，並散發一種像粽葉的自然香味。

這個盒子沒有精準的色碼、沒有一致的紋理。但每一片葉鞘的顏色、斑紋、纖維紋理，都來自它自己。

它不是完美的物件，但裝著土地的風範。我們只是，讓它的形，變成一個可以被使用的樣子。

檳榔（ビンロウ）の葉鞘（ようしょう）は、身近にあるのに見過ごされてきた素材です。田舎では、木の下や道端に積まれ、やがて火をつけて燃やされてしまうこともあります。多くの人にとっては「ただのごみ」かもしれませんが、私たちにとっては、とても魅力的な存在です。

表面は少し防水性があり、内側には水分を吸収する層があり、厚みや質感も含めて、とても興味深い自然素材だと感じています。

生活の中のヒントをたどりながら、私たちはこの素材に合う形を探しました。アミス族（阿美族）の暮らしには、食べ物を盛りつけるための器が多く存在していて、その作り方が葉鞘の特性とよく似ていることに気づきました。

また、東南アジアのいくつかの国々でも、昔から棕櫚や葉を使った箱や容器が日常の中にあったことを知りました。

そうして「鞘盒子（シェアホーズ）」という発想が少しずつ生まれました。葉鞘を柔らかくした状態で、手作業で上下のふたを折り曲げ、その後、太陽の光と風の中で乾燥させることで、しっかりとした形に仕上がります。

乾いた葉鞘からは、ちまきのような自然な香りがふわりと漂います。まるで、土地の記憶が封じ込められたような香りです。

この箱には、決まった色や模様はありません。一枚一枚、葉の色、斑点、繊維の流れがすべて違います。

完璧なプロダクトではありませんが、土地の気配を包んでくれる、そんな器です。

私たちはただ、その「かたち」が日々の中で使われるようにと、少しだけ手を添えただけです。

Areca sheaths are everywhere, yet often overlooked.In rural areas, they’re stacked under trees or along the roadside — sometimes even burned.To most, they’re waste. But to us, they carry a quiet kind of allure.

The surface is slightly water-resistant. The underside absorbs moisture.Its natural thickness and texture give it surprising potential as a material.

We started tracing clues from daily life.In the traditions of the Amis people, we noticed many ways of making simple food containers —techniques that happened to fit the qualities of areca sheath remarkably well.

We also found that in parts of Southeast Asia,similar uses of palm-based materials existed in daily life — folded, dried, practical.

That’s how the idea of the “Sheath Box” began to take shape.While the sheath is still soft, we fold it by hand into upper and lower lids,then let it dry in sunlight and wind until it sets firm.

Once dried, the box takes on its own strength —and even releases a light, earthy scent, like the smell of wrapped sticky rice leaves.

There’s no fixed color palette.No two are exactly the same.Every piece of sheath carries its own color shifts, markings, and grain lines.

It’s not a perfect product.But it holds a quiet presence — something that feels close to the ground.

We’re not trying to reshape it into something else.We’re just helping it become something usable, as it already is.
