盒與風｜Boxes in the Time of Wind

2021年初，全台陷入疫情封鎖，不能出門、不能上山，更別說去撿拾落下的葉鞘。我們只能留在室內，把最後幾批裁切好的葉片，一個一個加工、完成、出貨。這批做完，葉材就用完了。

盒子與器皿系列也暫時停工，直到能再次走進山林為止。如果有喜歡鞘盒的朋友，也歡迎私訊預定，等我們一收到葉材，就會第一時間為您製作。

檳榔葉鞘是一種帶有地域性的天然媒材。需要新鮮撿拾、浸水軟化，再以手工慢慢彎折，才能成形。這時候才發現，不能上山，就等於不能啟動下一批作品的節奏。

我們於是更仔細地看待手上的每一張葉片。它們有的來自山邊，有的來自田間，厚薄、紋理、色澤，都因時間與天氣而異。經過風乾後，厚實的葉面變得堅固結實，還帶著一種微微的香氣——我們覺得像焦糖，也像曬過太陽的木頭。

製作鞘盒時，我們會裁切固定的尺寸，但天然葉材會因先天條件與後天乾燥反應而有所收縮。我們盡可能讓每一件作品都穩定、踏實——即使是來自自然，也能與手工一起建立某種秩序。

這時候，桌上排滿了完成的盒子。我們一個個綁好、堆疊、打包。還剩下的，是少量的鞘卡套與鞘杯墊，也歡迎喜歡的朋友先收藏。

疫情期間，我們最常說的一句話是：「很想念山上的風，也想念可以大口呼吸的空氣。」

願大家都平安健康，我們會等葉材回來的那一天，再慢慢開始。

檳榔（ビンロウ）の葉鞘は、地域性を持った天然の素材です。新鮮なうちに採取し、水に浸して柔らかくし、手作業で丁寧に折り曲げて形をつくっていきます。山に入れないということは、次の製作のリズムを始められないということでもあります。

だからこそ、手元にある一枚一枚の葉に、いつも以上に目を向けました。山のふもとや田んぼのそばで拾ったそれぞれの葉は、時間や天候によって厚みや模様、色合いが異なります。乾燥させた後の葉鞘は、しっかりとした硬さを持ち、ほんのりとした自然の香りを放ちます——私たちはそれを「キャラメルのよう」と感じたり、日差しをたっぷり浴びた木の香りにも似ていると感じたりします。

鞘箱を作るとき、私たちは決まったサイズで裁断していますが、天然素材である葉鞘は、気候や乾燥の条件によって縮み方が変わってきます。その誤差をできる限り抑えながら、一つひとつ丁寧に仕上げていきます。自然の素材であっても、手の作業と共に秩序のある形にすることができると信じています。

この時期、作業台には完成した箱がずらりと並びます。ひとつずつ紐でくくり、重ねて、丁寧に梱包していきました。今は鞘カードケースや鞘コースターが少し残っているのみ。お気に入りがあれば、どうぞお早めに。

この頃、私たちがよく口にしていた言葉があります。「山の風が恋しい。思いきり深呼吸できる空気が、恋しい。」

In 2021, Taiwan went into full lockdown due to the pandemic.We couldn’t leave home, couldn’t go up the mountains, and certainly couldn’t gather fallen areca leaf sheaths.Staying indoors, we finished processing and shipping the last batch of pre-cut leaves—and when that was done, the leaf material was all gone.

Our box and vessel series came to a temporary pause,awaiting the next chance to return to the mountains.For those interested in the sheath boxes, feel free to message us—as soon as the next batch of leaf material arrives, we’ll begin making them again.

Areca leaf sheath is a naturally regional material.It must be freshly gathered, soaked to soften, then slowly bent by hand into form.It was during this time that we realized—not being able to go into the mountains meant the rhythm of creation couldn’t begin.

So we began to look more closely at each piece we still had on hand.Some came from mountain edges, others from the fields—each with its own thickness, texture, and tone, shaped by time and weather.Once dried, the thicker sheaths become firm and sturdy, carrying a faint, natural scent—to us, a bit like caramel, or sun-warmed wood.

When we make our sheath boxes, we cut the leaves into fixed dimensions.But as a natural material, each leaf shrinks differently, depending on both where it came from and how it dries.We do our best to minimize variation—believing that even nature, when handled with care, can take on a quiet kind of order.

At that time, our worktable was filled with finished boxes.We tied them, stacked them, and packed them one by one.Only a few sheath card cases and coasters remained—if you see one you like, you might want to claim it soon.

During that period, we kept repeating the same thing:“We miss the wind in the mountains. We miss the kind of air you can breathe deeply.”
